Cambrian Sea

The concept behind this piece was simple — combine elements of collage and illustration. I love prehistoric sea life and had recently purchased some ocean-themed magazines for collaging purposes, so I was inspired to create a scene of ocean life during the Cambrian explosion.

I researched and found reference images for several different Cambrian sea creatures, then cut each creature from different iridescent and holographic stock to give them a unique, "alive" feeling. The background was collaged together from magazine pages. Detail was added to both with a black fineliner. As a final touch, I gave each creature stick-on rhinestone eyes.
