An expanded square is a type of collage that reuses all left over cut paper to create a partially inverted design. First, a pattern is drawn on a black square of paper. Then, the design is split into quarters and cut out with an exacto knife. The original design is then pasted in place. All the left over pieces are then arranged around the original square, as if they had folded outward from the center, mirroring their respective quarter of the original design.
I decided to use this technique to create a geometric optical illusion. I first sketched some ideas, then chose my favorites and made quick miniature versions to get the hang of placing the individual strips correctly. I then merged the best aspects of the two to create one final piece.
